biomass

What is biomass?

A very general definition is: Material produced by the growth of microorganisms, plants or animals.

The main parts of all biomass are water and carbon based organic matter.

To further specify this definition the perspective, the purpose why biomass gets measured, is important: If you buy vegetables at the market they contain a lot of water that adds a lot to the weight, but thats normal since the customers want them raw and fresh. Biomass that is used for energetic use gets measured in dry mass instead because the water can’t be burned or reacted otherwise to generate heat or electricity.
